Stories & Poems About War
As death reached out its awful touch!
Which made the battle hard to win.
Marines were shot and blown away…
From all directions every day!
And then one morning “Old Glory” waved…
And gave more courage to our brave!
A group of Marines let the “empire” know…
That Mount Suribachi was now their foe!
Whistles blew while others cheered…
It was a moment; the enemy feared!
And for Chuck Lindberg, who took part…
That first flag raising was just the start!
Some hours later that flag was changed…
And that’s when history was rearranged!
For the first Marines who raised “Old Glory”…
The world was ignorant of their story.
The second raising got the fame…
And to this day it does remain!
The war went on long past that day…
And like so many, Chuck took a “stray”…
But he survived, just like “Old Glory”...
And lived to tell…the entire story!
This poem was written and dedicated to Chuck Lindberg…
The last survivor of the flag raisings on Iwo Jima…
