KATIE THE WELDER
We got your wife’s picture and can plainly see
She aided the war effort and was pretty as can be.
She was a good welder and worked hard and with care;
The ships she helped build took our men over there.
She came home tired and still had time to write;
Her words would encourage her husband in the fight.
She wrote of the baby and things that she’d seen;
Her letters gave comfort to her favorite Marine.
She wrote of her love, which got greater each day;
Then tears filled her eyes; what more could she say?
“Please come back safely to our daughter and me;
We’ll teach God’s message for all the world to see.”
She prayed to the Lord her man wouldn’t get killed;
Then one day he came home on a ship she helped build.
