Stories & Poems About War

The Lonesome Bugle

We gather every year this day…

To pay them our respect…

And thank them for our freedom…

Which we never can neglect!

“Memorial Day” is meant for them…

Throughout our land so free…

And stretches far beyond our shores…

To lands across the sea.

We can’t repay their sacrifice…

But a “thank you” might do well…

That’s really all these “heroes” ask…

For going through pure “hell”!

The ground we walk is “hallow” now…

So we choose our steps with care…

As we move among the many…

Of the numerous “heroes” there.

That’s how we come to visit…

And spend part of our day…

Sharing times of silence…

And reflecting our own way.

And when we see “Old Glory”

She fills us full of pride…

But to hear the lonesome bugle…

Always stirs the heart inside.
