A WIFE’S PRAYER
I opened the letter with loving care;
I would give my life if I could be there.
The words of the letter came from his heart;
He was at war; it was keeping us apart.
It was from my husband who was far away;
I will remember the words to my dying day.
He wrote, “I miss you, my darling,” and then I knew,
The love we have for each other suddenly grew.
The day I met him it was love at first sight;
Little did we know that he would have to fight.
He is in harm’s way for our baby and me,
So we can go on living in the land of the free.
I pray every day he will walk through our door;
The world will be at peace; there will be no war.
If he comes home wounded, I’ll hold him tight;
I’ll take care of him with all of my might.
Late at night in our bed where I lie,
Please God, I ask, don’t let him die.
How could I go through life if he were not here?
He’s all the future our baby and I hold dear.
I work in a shipyard, and I wish I could do more,
So my husband and his buddies can come back from the war.
As I read his letter that I hold in my hand,
Please, God in Heaven, bring back my man.
We’ll work together and pass on the word
That there is a God in Heaven, and He should be heard.
