I
was commissioned in the US Marine Corps Reserve as a second Lieutenant in June
1948. I joined the 14th Signal
Company, USMCR, Brooklyn, New York in September 1948 and served a a Radio
Officer until July, 1950 when the unit was called o active duty following the
outbreak of the Korean War. I was stationed at Camp Pendleton from August to
early October when, with 300 other Second
Lieutenants, I was sent to Quantico Marine Base for additional training as part
of the First Special Basic Class. Following this ten week course, I returned to
Camp Pendleton in January, 1951 for winter training. I was then assigned to the
Fifth Replacement Draft and was shipped with 2500 Marines to Korea, arriving in
late January, 1951. I
was assigned to Easy Company, Second Battalion, Seventh Marines and given
command of the First Platoon. I led the platoon from late January to late March,
1951 when I was transferred to H&S Company. Shortly after that, I was
transferred to Regimental Headquarters and assigned duties as Assistant
Regimental S-1, Legal Officer and Secretary of the Regimental Awards Board. In
September 1951 I received orders to return to the United States and was released
from active duty in late September 1951. In
October 1953, after being promoted to the rank of Captain, I moved from New York
City to the Washington, DC area and joined the 13th Infantry
Battalion, USMCR. I served as Company Commander, Battalion S-3 and Battalion
Executive Officer. In January, 1961, I was discharged from the US Marine Corps
Reserve. I have continued to participate in Marine Corps activities serving on the Board of the First Marine Division Association and as Reunion Coordinator for the First Special Basic Class. My mother and father served in the Marine Corps on active duty in World War One. |
