Most Memorable Moment |
A number of us were activated from Co. B, 18TH.
Infantry BN located in Ft. Wayne,In. and
transported by train to Camp Pendleton and then
most of us on to MCRD and Boot Camp. After Boot
camp we were in a Casual Co.
At Pendleton then to mess duty at Camp Del Mar.
I did some art work there which was noted by the
CO of the Amtrac Unit. I was transferred to that
unit and performed art work and topographical
work at the Colonels office with his staff.
I was released and transferred to Tent Camp 2 to
join my buddies. We trained there and then
transported by the ship Thomas Jefferson to Kobe
,Japan following a Typhoon most of the way ! We
reboarded the ship and sailed to Pusan, Korea,
We were put on a plane and taken to the
Chunchon area where we were met by trucks that
were to take us to the 7th. Reg. CP
but drove for several hours in no mans land
until we ran into one of our tanks that was on
patrol and they directed us in the right
direction. At the CP we went on to the 2nd
BN CP loaded with C-rations which we carried to
the units on the Kansas Line. At that time we
were assigned to Companies, squads and fire
teams. I was taken by my assigned squad leader
Bill Burkett (POP) who in turn assigned me to a
three man fire team led by Boyce Clark and
became B.A.R. man immediately ! J.D.Hargrove was
our scout .We functioned as a three man fire
team off and on until J.D. and Boyce left for
home. The first time we pulled off of the Kansas
Line John Kuhn and myself were assigned as rear
guard and while awaiting contact we wired
numerous grenades to surrounding trees and ran
trip lines across trails etc. on top of the
ridgeline. We made our contact to a number of
bugles blaring and discreetly with drew to the
rear with the gratifying sound of explosions for
quite some time as we made our escape.
I think laying Air Panels for the first time was
about as terrifying as any other event save the
120 m/m mortars coming in on us as often as they
did and effectively with resultant casualties.
When said panels were spread out you hoped that
they were laid out properly when the F4Us came
in with their 50’s blazing and brass falling out
of the sky and dropping napalm and bombs that
looked as though they would drop right in your
lap………..That bothered me! Assaults on enemy
positions were always right up there in the
pucker factor and my fist one really was scary
but training kicked in and it was almost
automatic. For an 18 year old it was really
another world for a while that is until all of a
sudden you become an old salt ! I can thank
Boyce and J.D. for preparing me for the long
haul!

Career After USMC |
When I arrived back in the States on the General Gordon we
docked in San Francisco, then to Treasure Island put on
trucks, taken to a train then on to MCRD. I went to the
Naval Hospital with Malaria but was soon released to go
home. I attended Indiana University, became married and a
father and bought a home while working for American Optical
Corp. as an Inventory Manager in Chicago. I resigned and
went to work for Bausch & Lomb Inc. as Inventory
Distribution and Control Executive for the Western Division
in Denver, Co. I turned down a promotion to a V.P. position
in Rochester, N.Y. to remain in Denver. I did consultation
work for awhile then drifted into the Pharmaceutical field
for a few years while building a new home in the mountains
north of Woodland Park, Co. I became involved in Real
Estate, Insurance and in Criminal Justice. I served as a
Reserve Sheriffs Deputy, eventually as a full time deputy in
Park County. I then was
Appointed Police Chief at Green Mountai Falls,Co. I moved on
later from there to a farm in Arkansas where I planned to
retire. I went to work as a Court Security Specialist for
the U.S. Marshals Service in Little Rock then ended my
career as a
