I can still remember going out on Combat Patrols in Korea. It was a nerve-wracking experience from the time leading up to going out through the wire, then being as quiet as you can as you made your way through "No-mans-land" till you got set up and completed your nights mission.  I got to where I dreaded & feared going because of the stress associated with the above and of course, the possibility of getting wounded or KIA.  Then one night I realized that Doc Phillips was going out in front of the lines again with us.  I held my breath as we got out where we were supposed to go and set up our ambush.  I looked over at Doc Phillips and he was sound asleep. I found out later that he had been going out every night with every patrol who went in front of the wire.  I was amazed at his courage.  He also had to do his daily duties as a Corpsman.  One night, after four Marines had stepped over a bouncing-betty and the second guy in front of me tripped it, by the way, that sound will never be forgotten, I fell sideways and face down and heard the explosion and knew one or more of my buddies was badly wounded.  Doc Phillips got to him and did what he could to bandage him up and stop the bleeding - both of his legs were messed up. We carried him back to the lines. Doc, with his selfless attitude and unwavering devotion to our well-being, gave me courage.  I figured that if he can go out every night, I could go out once a week and shut my mouth and quit worrying. Our Corpsmen gave strength and courage to all of us. I Thank God for the privilege of getting to serve with them.
