I served in Easy Co. 2nd Bn, 5th Marines in Korea.   2-5 was in reserve near the town of Inji on the Inji River. There was an air strip beside our camp where Syngman Rhee [SoKoPres] landed in August and trooped the line. When the peace talks fell through, we went up on line, ran patrols and improved the trench line. In mid-September we launched the attack on Hill 812, I went from Right Guide to PltSgt early on the 17th and later that day was hit on "Lukes Castle". Since I'd only been PltSgt for a few hours, I had the doc bandage me up and stayed with the Plt.  At 0300 on the 18th we heard the bugles and screaming, and knew they were coming. [my Plt was in a U shaped defensive position extending from our company line, out the ridgeline to Lukes Castle]. To make a long story short, we were down to a handful of non-wounded, and were ordered to pull back to the Company lines, I had myself, my Corpsman and a pfc Burket, we carried our plt Leader [Lt Matis, shot in the neck] back to the lines with the Doc as our rear guard. As we got to our lines, Gunny Stan Wawrziniak, who received 2 Navy Crosses, with at least one platoon from Dog Company came through our lines and re-took Lukes Castle. Later that day Dog Company relieved Easy company.  Stan was later commissioned and retired as a LtCol. He lived in North Carolina, where he died a few years ago. FYI: The 1stMarDiv will have it's 64th birthday commemoration from 30Jan thru 05Feb 2005, at Camp Pendleton. I had the honor to serve as the Division Sergeant Major, as my last duty assignment, retiring after 30 years .
